Submission on the Draft Advice for the Second Emissions Reduction Plan

19 June 2023

The Climate Change Commission released its draft advice for the New Zealand Government's Second Emissions Reduction Plan, which will govern our national strategy to reducing emissions from 2025-2030.

  • We agree with and support the vast majority of the Climate Change Commission’s draft advice on the second emissions reduction plan (2026-2030).

  • We call for an integrated approach to climate action, driven at the local and national level, that will reduce emissions while protecting the poor and vulnerable in society. This should be driven by the principles of stewardship, the common good, subsidiarity and preferential option for the poor and vulnerable.

  • We believe that meaningful climate action entails not just finding technological solutions to minimise the emissions associated with consumption, but reducing our consumption and demand on the planet’s non-renewable resources.
