‘Caritas is where the need is’ - Joy Cowley

Above: Joy Cowley and Caritas Chief Executive Mena Antonio.

Acclaimed author Joy Cowley is best known for her children's fiction, including the popular series ‘Mrs. Wishy-Washy’. Joy describes herself as a ‘wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother’, but she also has a special place in the Caritas whānau.

Joy, a long-time supporter, and friend of Caritas has been a One World Partner for 15 years. Joy spoke to CEO Mena Antonio about her years of support, and why her commitment to Caritas’ work endures.

Why do you support the work of Caritas?

The work of Caritas is real, necessary and in a very practical way sends help where help is needed. My husband Terry and I did a lot of research before fixing on Caritas.

What aspects of the work of Caritas do you personally feel a commitment to?

The breadth of the work Caritas does. It’s not just this and that. But Caritas is where the need is. Caritas don’t make political decisions where they go but gives help where help’s most wanted.

How important are Caritas’s Gospel values and Catholic social teaching underpinnings to you?

Jesus talks to us through the Gospel, like verse in Matthew – ‘inasmuch as you did it to the least of my children, you do it to me’. The gospel is where the church is at.

What is it that you like about being a regular donor?

It’s doing something worthwhile. We can’t directly change the world, but you can through the work of Caritas.

Above: The support of our One World Partners makes an immediate response to disasters and emergencies, like the 2022 eruption and tsunami in Tonga, possible.
