Case Study
The small island eco-systems of the Pacific Islands are greatly affected by changing weather patterns and cyclones can be devastating because people rely heavily on farming and fishing.
The Tongan islands of Ha’apai is one such eco-system, as they are low lying and do not have natural reservoirs of water. This means people rely on rain-fed drinking water as the ground water is too salty to drink.
In recent years, the rainy season has not provided as much rainfall and when followed by a drought, water is in short supply.
In partnership with Caritas Tonga, we brought in new plastic rainwater-collection tanks and restored some older concrete tanks. In this way, locals have a more reliable supply of water.
