We have been building a relationship with Ngāti Kurī in Kaikōura.
In September 2013, Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand was approached by members of Ngāti Kurī in Kaikōura and made aware of their struggle against proposed deep-sea oil exploration in the Pegasus Basin.
We have offered some advocacy support and have featured their issue in our report on environmental issues affecting people throughout Oceania.
Following the earthquake in November 2016 Caritas offered support to the people of Kaikōura.
Members of this community have a historic link to Caritas through relationships that were established with former Catholic Commission for Justice, Peace and Development Executive Director Fr John Curnow. This organisation was the precursor to Caritas.
