Our work is grounded in Catholic social teaching (CST), a body of thought on social issues. CST applies gospel values such as love, peace, justice, compassion, service, and community to modern social problems.
Human dignity - Every person is invaluable and worthy of respect as a member of the human family. The dignity of the person grants them political, legal, social, and economic rights. Each person is created in the image of God.
Preferential protection for the poor and vulnerable - We think first of the needs of those who are the most vulnerable. We aim to feed the hungry, offer hospitality to strangers look after the sick and respond to public policy decisions on how they affect the poor.
Participation - Everyone has a right to play part in our communities. We each have something unique and important to contribute to society and are called on to be active members of our local and global communities.
Common good – Using our gifts and talents for the good of others. The good of others, and the whole human family, in organising our society—economically, politically, and legally, locally and globally, we prioritise the good of the human family over commercial interests alone.
Distributive justice – All people have the right to share in the world’s resources, having access to necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. This also relates to the distribution of income, wealth, and power within society.
Stewardship – Being responsible guardians, caring for the environment and one another. We have a responsibility to care for the gifts God has given us.
Solidarity – Recognising others as our brothers and sisters and actively working for their good. We are one human family -. transcending national, racial, economic, and ideological differences. We are called to work globally for justice.
Promotion of Peace – Reflecting respect for all human life, safeguarding the dignity and freedom of all people. Promotion of Peace calls for us to actively promote justice, respect for others, especially the marginalised.
Subsidiarity – Ensuring work and decision making happens at the most appropriate level so all affected can contribute. Caritas works in partnership with local communities and groups, as they have insight into what is best for their communities.
