Te Rūnanga o te Hāhi Katorika ki Aotearoa

In our relationships with tangata whenua, Caritas consults with Te Rūnanga o te Hāhi Katorika ki Aotearoa, the National Catholic Māori Council.

It is essential to show special care for indigenous communities and their cultural traditions.  They are not merely one minority among others, but should be the principal dialogue partners.

Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ #146

As an advisory council to the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference, Te Rūnanga o te Hāhi Katorika includes representatives from each Diocese and an expert group which advises on the use of Te Reo Māori in a Catholic context.

Caritas also supports Te Rūnanga o te Hāhi Katorika to build its own capacity and its own relationship with other indigenous Catholics, including the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Catholic Council of Australia.
