Work and employment

Caritas advocates for the dignity of work, and the protection of vulnerable workers.

"Work and the need to work should never be the means of exploiting anyone for another's gain."

New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference, 2010

Caritas stands up for the dignity of work, and the protection of vulnerable workers. Through work, we participate in society, and form relationships with others. Since the deregulation of the New Zealand labour market in the early 1990s, there has been an increase in insecure work. We hear from many Catholic social service agencies of working families struggling to make ends meet.

We have written several submissions in recent years commenting on the condition of low-income workers in New Zealand. In particular, in 2015 we submitted around the issue of zero hours contracts and the growing phenomenon of insecure work.

The theme of from low income to enough to thrive was one theme of the 2015 Social Justice Week focus on family poverty.
